The Association of Sommeliers of Madrid organized a tour to Marqués de Riscal Winery in El Ciego, Álava. Evervinum could not miss it. 

La Asociación de Sumilleres de Madrid organizó una visita a la bodega Marqués de Riscal en El Ciego, Álava. Evervinum no podía perdérselo. 

A group of about 40 sommeliers were warmly welcomed by one of the members of the executive staff who guided us through the different facilities.

Un grupo de alrededor de 40 sumilleres recibimos una cálida acogida por parte de uno de los directores técnicos, que nos guió a través de las diferentes instalaciones.

They provided us a VIP visit that included all the lounges, the fermentation plant, the aging lounges, the hotel (fantastic job by Frank Gehry) and the restaurant, the vineyards...

Nos obsequiaron con una visita VIP que incluía todas las salas, la planta de fermentación, las salas de crianza, el hotel (fantástico trabajo de Frank Gehry) y el restaurante, los viñedos...

After the visit we could taste some of the jewels of the winery: I would want to emphasise Barón de Chirel Reserva 2012 -simply amazing- and Marqués de Riscal 150 aniversario 2010.

Después de la visita pudimos catar algunas de las joyas de la bodega: me gustaría destacar el Barón de Chirel Reserva 2012 -simplemente espectacular- y Marqués de Riscal 150 aniversario 2010. 

All the wines paired with a delicious menu prepared for the occasion. The moment to talk with the mates tasting those great red wines.

Maria introduced the topic using a powerpoint presentation. She did her best explaining the differents features of the wines, the grape varieties, the winemakers and owners, the wineries and the regions.

María introdujo el tema mediante una presentación de powerpoint. Ella dio lo mejor de sí misma explicando las diferentes características de los vinos, las variedades de uva, los enólogos y bodegueros, las bodegas y las denominaciones de origen.

The first wine was Braó, from Acústic Celler in Montsant, Tarragona. Fine colour and a typical earthy touch. Different!! We could compare it with its neighbour Vi de Vila Gratallops from Priorat. Nice exercise!!

El primer vino fue Braó, de Acústic Celler en Montsant, Tarragona. Excelente color y con el característico toque mineral. Diferente!! Pudimos compararlo con su vecino Vi de Vila Gratallops de Priorat. Bonito ejercicio!!

The second wine, a real classic made following the traditional method of the Rioja whites, Viña Gravonia 2006, a white with aging in barrel, a nice golden colour and a complexity due to the wood that made a contrast with the more modern wines of the rest of the tasting.


El segundo vino, todo un clásico elaborado a la manera tradicional de los blancos de La Rioja, Viña Gravonia 2006, un blanco con barrica, un bonito color dorado y una complejidad debida a la madera que contrastaba con los vinos más modernos del resto de la cata.

We paired it with a delicious hake clovisse with asparagus. Savory and pleasant!!

Lo maridamos con una deliciosa merluza clovisse con espárragos. Un placer para el paladar!!

After these great wines the best had not come yet. The wine chosen to pair the main dish: Vi de Vila Gratallops from Priorat and Loin Cambray with potatoes and French onions. Our guests were delighted.

Tras esos grandes vinos lo mejor todavía no había llegado. El vino escogido para armonizar el plato principal: Vi de Vila Gratallops de Priorato y el lomo Cambray con patatas y cebollitas francesas. Nuestros invitados estaban encantados.

The last wine was a Maria's risky bet: pairing a complex red from Toro, Pintia, with the dessert, tiramisu. Brilliant!! A cascade of flavours: tobacco,  coffe, cacao, coconut, black species...

El último vino fue una apuesta arriesgada de María: armonizar un tinto complejo de Toro, Pintia, con el postre, tiramisú. Brillante!! Una cascada de sabores: tabaco, café, cacao, coco, especias negras...

This time the table talk included a little surprise for our customers connected with Saint Valentine's day. They also created a group of Evervinum friends. Great idea!! What else can we ask?

Esta vez la sobremesa incluyó una pequeña sorpresa para nuestros clientes relacionada con el día de San Valentín. Ellos a su vez crearon un grupo de amigos de Evervinum. Gran idea!! ¿Qué más se puede pedir?

Tasting note: Ojos del Guadiana / Nota de cata: Ojos del Guadiana

Deep cherry red colour and medium layer not very deep. 

De color rojo cereza picota y capa media no muy profunda. 

In nose it displays a penetrating and intense fruit typical of the cabernet sauvignon, a bit rude and woodsy. Seasoned with a bouquet of species like nutmeg and clove.

En nariz presenta una fruta penetrante e intensa propia de la cabernet sauvignon, algo ruda y silvestre. Aderezada con un bouquet de especias como la nuez moscada y el clavo.

In mouth it is a fresh and fun wine, vivid with correct fruity tannins, something fleshy, with hints of roasted pepper and ginger that suggest to drink more.

En boca es un vino fresco y alegre, vivaz y de correctos taninos, algo carnoso, con notas de pimiento asado y jengibre, que invita a beber más.

Ojos del Guadiana is a young red with three months in barrel. A coupage of cabernet sauvignon, syrah and merlot. From El Progreso Winery (La Mancha DO).

Tasting note: Lagar de Deuses godello / Nota de cata: Lagar de Deuses godello

Golden deep yellow colour, glossy and neat.

In nose it features wide and deep aromas of  stone fruit like apricot, but also ripe apple or baked apple and quince jelly.

In mouth is ample, balanced, structured and extremely lingering, oily and creamy. Its ripe fruit covers the mouth with strong greedy touches. It has a great aftertaste with memories of delicate pastries covered with sugar coated fruits like caramel-coated almond.

De color amarillo dorado profundo, limpio y brillante.

En nariz presenta amplios y profundos aromas a fruta de hueso como albaricoque, pero también manzana madura o asada y compota de membrillo.

En boca es amplio, equilibrado, estructurado y tremendamente largo, untuoso y cremoso. Su fruta madura cubre la boca con intensos toques golosos. Tiene un gran retrogusto con recuerdos a bollería fina cubierta de frutos escarchados como almendra garrapiñada.

Cherry red colour with violet rim. Deep and covered layer. 

In nose it displays plenty of ripe fruit with suggestive spices that presage a flamboyant taste.

In mouth it features ripe well-balanced fruit, with an elegant and promising acidity. Its tannins, nothing rough, are still fruity, but they also tell us about the earth... sips nuanced with minerality. The end is seductive with memories of that scrubland that arises from the rocks of the landscape.

Color rojo cereza con ribete violáceo. De profunda y cubierta capa. 

En nariz presenta abundante fruta madura con sugerentes especias que anuncian un sabor exuberante.

En boca presenta frutos maduros, bien equilibraods con una elegante y prometedora acidez. Sus taninos, nada ásperos, son aún frutales, pero también nos hablan de la tierra... sorbos matizados de mineralidad. El final es sugerente con recuerdos a ese montebajo que surge de las rocas del paisaje.

New tasting at Evervinum / Nueva cata en Evervinum

A new opportunity to taste five wines at Evervinum, guided by the connoiseur María Córdoba, and paired with four delicious dishes.

Una nueva oportunidad para catar cinco vinos en Evervinum, de la mano experta de María Córdoba, y armonizados con cuatro deliciosos platos.

Four reds: young Ojos del Guadiana from La Mancha DO for the starters. Braó, the best quality from Montsant DO as the main wine as well as Tionio, from Ribera del Duero DO, and Più, a slightly sweet red from Málaga for the dessert

Tres tintos: el joven Ojos del Guadiana de la DO La Mancha para los entrantes. Braó, la mejor calidad de Montsant como vino principal, junto don Tionio de la DO Ribera del Duero, y Più, un tinto abocado de Málaga para el postre.

After the starters, Lagar de Deuses, a fine godello from Monterrei, DO.

Tras los aperitivos, Lagar de Deuses, un buen godello de la DO Monterrei.

Our guests, part good customers and part new friends, could be delighted with our dishes: rondela of pâté and French cheese, vegetable pudding with tomato cream, sirloin in Greek sauce with apple and pine nuts and croissants baked with wild fruits.

Nuestros invitados, en parte buenos clientes y en parte nuevos amigos, pudieron deleitarse con nuestros platos: rondela de patés y queso francés, budin de verdura en salsa de tomate, lomo en salga griega con manzana y piñones y medias lunas horneadas con frutas del bosque.

As usual, María began with a short speech using a powerpoint explaining the main concepts of the tasting as well as the wineries and the regions of the tasted wines.

Como habitualmente, María comenzó con una breve presentación mediante un powerpoint explicando los principales conceptos de la cata además de las bodegas y las regiones de los vinos catados.

The attendants enjoyed the excellent white godello Lagar de Deuses. Great value for the money. They also stated Braó is a surprising Monsant with great quality and strength. María praised the young red Ojos del Guadiana, a true discovery. And Più provided the best end for the tasting.

Los asistentes disfrutaron el excelente blanco godello Lagar de Deuses. Magnífica relación calidad precio. También comentaron que Braó es un sorprendente Monsant con gran calidad y fuerza. María alabó el joven tinto Ojos del Guadiana, un verdadero descubrimiento. Y el Più proporcionó el mejor final para la cata.

The best moments of the tasting, as always, were when the guests could ask all the doubts about the wine world. Questions that María answered one by one. All of them enjoyed the afternoon. The time went by... and we could chat and share: the magic of wine.

Los mejores momentos de la cata, como siempre, fueron cuando los invitados pudieron preguntar todas sus dudas sobre el mundo del vino. Preguntas que María respondió una por una. Todos disfrutaron la tarde. El tiempo pasó... y pudimos charlar y compartir: la magia del vino.
