Tasting notes: Poeta en Nueva York tempranillo barrel / Notas de cata: Poeta en Nueva York tempranillo barrica

Intense red cherry colour. It is a highly spicy wine in nose with aromas of raspberry soaked in cinnamon and clove. Some hints of liquorice and scrubland: lavender and thyme, typical from the desert-like area where it comes from.

Color rojo cereza, capa de color alta. Es un vino altamente especiado en nariz con aromas de frambuesa macerada en canela y clavo. Algunos toques de regaliz y montebajo: espliego y tomillo, propios del área desértica de donde procede.

In mouth the fruit nearly disappears and, however, the hints of wood emerge: toast and smoky notes, coffee, tobacco and a somewhat sharp paprika, not tannic though. A correct acidity and a medium swallow. Last but not least, a good value for money.

En boca la fruta casi desaparece y, sin embargo, aparecen las notas de la madera: tostados y ahumados, café, tabaco y un pimentón algo punzante aunque no tánico. Una acidez correcta y una longitud de trago media. Por último, pero no menos importante, una buena relación calidad/precio.

Poeta en Nueva York tempranillo barrel comes from Rambla de Huarea Winery in Albuñol (Vinos de Granada). A red wine made with 80% tempranillo variety, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 10% garnacha. Aged for several months in barrel.

Perhaps one of the Spanish smallest wineries with the name of one of the greatest cities in the world.

Evervinum tasting at Cortijo Alcaudique / Cata Evervinum en el Cortijo Alcaudique

An informal meeting of friends and family was the perfect occasion for visiting the countryside of Loja, knowing an Andalusian cortijo: Alcaudique and tasting good wines from distant regions of Spain.

Una reunión informal de amigos y familia fue la ocasión perfecta para visitar la tierra de Loja (Granada), conocer un cortijo andaluz: Alcaudique y catar buenos vinos de lejanas regiones de España.

As usual, María explained using a powerpoint the different wines choosen for the tasting, especially the txacolí Astobiza and the Finca Antigua petit verdot. We also tasted the sweet red Più from Málaga, where some of the attendants came from, and an ice wine from Picos de Cabariezo (Cantabria IGP).

Como habitualmente, María explicó mediante un powerpoint los diferentes vinos escogidos para la cata, especialmente el txacolí  Astobiza y el Finca Antigua petit verdot. También catamos el tinto dulce Più de Málaga, de donde algunos de los asistentes procedían, y un vino de hielo de Picos de Cabariezo (IGP Cantabria).

After the explanation María offered the wines in order paired with cold tapas and some hot dishes: appetizers, omelettes, white meats with sauce...

Tras la presentación, María sirvió los vinos en orden maridados con tapas frías y algunos platos calientes: entrantes, tortillas, carnes blancas en salsa...

The txacolí Astobiza, a young white coming from DO Txacolí Álava was a nice surprise to all our guests. Txacolí is not a common wine in the South, so it was a great opportunity to taste one. And Astobiza did not dissapoint anybody. You can read more about this wine here:

Più, the light sweet red from Málaga, was the perfect squire for the northern white. Aromatic and drinkable, the people enjoyed it while eating the appetizers.

Più, el tinto ligeramente dulce de Málaga, fue el escudero perfecto para el blanco norteño. Aromático y fácil de beber, todos lo disfrutaron mientras probaban los aperitivos.

The main wine came from DO La Mancha, from a winery located between Cuenca and Toledo: Finca Antigua. It is a 100% petit verdot aged in barrel for about a year. A french-stily wine, elegant and classic. You can read the tasting note here:

We finished with the sweet ice wine Hielu de Picos (Picos de Cabariezo Winery). Good end for the tasting and again a surprise to the new wine lovers. 

Terminamos con el dulce vino de hielo Hielu de Picos (Bodega Picos de Cabariezo). Buen final para la cata y nuevamente una sorpresa para los nuevos enamorados del vino.

Alcaudique has a long history as one of the most important country houses of the region. Located close to the range and surrounded by olive trees, the pictures speak for themselves.

Alcaudique tiene una larga historia como una de las más importantes casas de campo de la región. Situada cerca de la sierra y rodeada de olivos, las imágenes hablan por sí mismas.

Red ruby colour. This petit verdot is a little close in nose. It opens with difficulty, but as the time goes by in the cup it develops a very french-like wine, delicate and elegant. Its spices remind those from overseas: notes of light coffee, not agressive at all pipe tobacco. As well as something of juniper and bark.

Color rojo rubí. Este petit verdot es algo cerrado en nariz. Se abre con dificultad, pero con el tiempo en copa se muestra como un vino muy afrancesado fino y elegante. Sus especias recuerdan más a las de ultramar: toques de café ligero, tabaco de pipa nada agresivo. También algo de enebro y corteza de árbol.

It is a french-style wine like french burgundy ones with tamed tannins, large swallow for enjoying paired with a good duck confit. 

Es un vino al estilo francés de los borgoñas, de taninos domados, de trago amplio para disfrutar con buen confit de pato por ejemplo.

Very pale yellow colour.

In nose it seems fresh and natural. Open and cheerful, it leads us to a field of recently cut grass full of white flowers with citrus notes not agressive at all. 

En nariz se muestra franco y fresco. Abierto y alegre, nos abre la puerta a un campo de hierba recién cortada repleta de flores blancas con toques cítricos nada agresivos.

Astobiza is a txacolí (young white wine) from Álava made mainly with ondarribi zuri variety.

Cuatro Vientos Grape juice Festival / Fiesta del Mosto en la bodega Cuatro Vientos

Within our project of interviews with personalities from the wine world in Granada, we visited yesterday the Cuatro Vientos winery taking advantage of their Annual grape juice Festival.

Dentro de nuestro proyecto de entrevistas a personalidades del mundo del vino, visitamos ayer la bodega Cuatro Vientos aprovechando la celebración de su fiesta del mosto.

The winery is located 1100 mts above the see but with awesome panoramic views of it as well as the best panorama of the Sierra Nevada South hillside. An extraordinary setting you only can find in certain regions of Chile or Japan. 

La bodega está situada a 1100 metros sobre el nivel del mar pero con increíbles vistas panorámicas sobre él además de la mejor vista de la vertiente sur de Sierra Nevada. Un enclave extraordinario que sólo se puede encontrar en ciertas zonas de Chile o Japón.

First of all we visited the gardens where one can see the old and large earthenware jars and old crushers. Before or after their visit, in sunny days like today, the visitors can go for a walk taking photos or simply giving in to the site magic. 

Primeramente visitamos los jardines donde se pueden contemplar las antiguas tinajas y prensas. Antes o después de su visita, en días soleados como hoy, los visitantes pueden pasear tirando fotos o simplemente abandonarse a la magia del lugar.

After seeing the outdoors, we visited the comprehensive theme centre about the wine: two museums, the aging lounge, the tasting lounge, the restaurant, the wine shop...Videos, explanations, a nice collection of old photos of the region and tools related to wine tasks.

Tras ver el exterior visitamos el centro temático del vino, muy completo: dos museos, la sala de crianza, el salón de cata, el restaurante, la tienda del vino...Vídeos, explicaciones, una preciosa colección de fotos de época de la región y herramientas relacionadas con las faenas vinícolas.

At the aging lounges we tasted the new fresh and good quality must. Paco Molina, the winemaker, was our cicerone and here he showed us their innovative idea for opening the winery to friends and wine lovers: chambers with private niches where families or companies can keep their wines and, of course, drink them when they want.

En las salas de crianza catamos el nuevo mosto fresco y de buena calidad. Paco Molina, el enólogo, fue nuestro cicerone y aquí nos mostró su ideal original para abrir la bodega a amigos y amantes del vino: cámaras con nichos privados donde familias o empresas pueden conservar sus vinos y, por supuesto, beberlos cuando quieran.

After the visit our hosts, Juan Castillo, one of the brothers who own the winery, and Paco Molina, the winemaker and "factotum", invited us to share the lunch with them so María could interviewed them, but that is another story...

We could taste a really good young syrah and a outstanding aged garnacha directly served from the barrel.

Tras la visita nuestros anfitriones, Juan Castillo, uno de los hermanos propietarios de la bodega, y Paco Molina, el enólogo y"factótum", nos invitaron a compartir mesa con ellos de manera que María pudiera entrevistarlos, pero esa es otra historia...

Pudimos catar un joven syrah realmente bueno y un sobresaliente garnacha crianza servido directamente de la barrica.

A mail from Rafael Fernández has brought very bad news from Fernández-Herrero Winery. Luisa Herrero's passing in the last july has reminded us of her good manners, refined carriage and charm. Both of them, Luisa and his husband Rafael as well as their close friend Bruno welcomed us in their winery two years ago opening their work, life and memories from the past. Nice interview, the best company with the best wines.

El fallecimiento de Luisa Herrero el pasado mes de julio nos ha recordado su educación, su porte distinguido y su amabilidad. Ambos, Luisa y su marido Rafael junto con su íntimo amigo Bruno nos recibieron en su bodega hace dos años mostrándonos su trabajo, su vida y sus recuerdos del pasado. Bonita entrevista, la mejor compañía con los mejores vinos.

Innovative concepts at Wine Experience Costa del Sol II

Dirty Boots

Dirty Boots follows the new trend of making and marketing wines from different Spanish areas. A multi-brand company that bids for a strong concept, a nice design, not forgetting the wine quality though.

Botas de Barro

Botas de Barro sigue la nueva tendencia de elaborar y comercializar vinos de diferentes zonas de España. Una empresa multi-marca que apuesta por un potente concepto, un atractivo diseño, sin olvidar la calidad de los vinos.

A wide range from Rueda, Ribera, Rioja, Almansa and Jumilla. María liked the wines from ancient regions as Almansa and Jumilla that are been revitalised now. The red from Almansa made with a surprising garnacha tintorera: flavours and taste of nutmeg. And an enveloping Jumilla with soft hints of aniseed. We chatted with the manager joking about the winery name: dirty boots due to the tour from one region to another.

Una amplia variedad que va desde Rueda, Ribera, Rioja a Almansa y Jumilla. A María le gustaron los vinos de antiguas zonas como Almansa y Jumilla que están siendo revitalizadas en la actualidad. El tinto de Almansa, elaborado con una sorprendente garnacha tintorera: aromas y gusto a nuez moscada. Y un envolvente Jumilla con suaves toques de matalahúga. Charlamos con el gerente bromeando acerca del nombre de la bodega: botas de barro debido al trayecto de una región a otra.

Nuestras palabras en el stand de Botas de Barro acerca de este blog atrajeron la atención del gerente de Orgullo Wine. ¡¡Blog sobre vinos en inglés en España!! Ismael Amor, un emprendedor que proviene del campo del diseño y la imagen de marca, con un concepto arriesgado e innovador: Orgullo Wine. ¡¡Sí!! ¡Como suena!

Ismael told us about the export potential with business start-up in UK, Europe and Asia. They also make craft-beer.

Ismael nos habló sobre el potencial de exportación con implantación de negocio en Reino Unido, Europa y Asia. También elaboran cerveza artesana.

Their wines are easy-drinking, with a good value for money. A red made with petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon and tempranillo with not very long aging (8 month), a French style white with chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, fresh, fruity and very sensual and a rossé 100% syrah, a quite suggesting wine.

Sus vinos son fáciles de beber, con una buena relación calidad/precio. Un tinto elaborado con petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon y tempranillo con una crianza no muy larga (8 meses), un blanco al estilo francés con chardonnay y sauvignon blanc, fresco, afrutado y muy sensual y un rosado monovarietal de syrah, un vino muy sugerente. 

Not a winery, but a brand marketing different wines with desing and concept. Their main target are LGTB groups so they cooperate with NGOs in countries where they have no rights.

No una bodega sino una marca comercializando diferentes vinos con diseño y concepto. Se dirigen principalmente a colectivos LGTBI cooperando con ONGs en países donde no tienen sus derechos reconocidos.

Last but not least, we could visit at a corner a small booth carried by José Luis Hernández: Small Spanish DO's. We could glipse an Irving bottle. Irving is one of the less known and great wines from Granada D.O. as our customers and readers know very well. At that booth we could taste a fresh txakolí from Guetaria, Basque Country: Aizpurua winery. 

Por último pero no menos importante, pudimos visitar en una esquina un pequeño stand a cargo de José Luis Hernández: Pequeñas DO's. Atisbamos una botella de Irving. Irving es uno de los poco conocidos pero grandes vinos de la D.O. Granada como nuestros clientes y lectores saben muy bien. En ese stand pudimos catar un fresco txacolí de Guetaria, País Vasco: la bodega Aizpurúa.

It is an interesting challenge: to promote small areas that are not strong enough to promote themselves as wines from Granada like Irving. 

Es un reto interesante: promover pequeñas denominaciones que no son lo suficientemente fuertes como para promocionarse ellas mismas como los vinos de Granada (en este caso Irving). 

Wine Experience Costa del Sol II

Again we could attend the Wine Experience Costa del Sol that took place in Alhaurín de la Torre, very close to Málaga. New rendezvous, new wineries and wines, but also good friends we could chat with.

De nuevo pudimos asistir al Wine Experience Costa del Sol que tuvo lugar en Alhaurín de la Torre, muy próximo a Málaga. Nueva cita, nuevas bodegas y vinos, pero también buenos amigos con los que pudimos conversar. 

María visited many booths systematically with her notebook, pen, cup and nose...This year the event has not been organized by a distributor what has let a greater range of participants.

María se pasó por muchos stands sistemáticamente, con su cuaderno, boli, copa y nariz... Este año el evento no ha sido organizado por una distribuidora lo que ha permitido una mayor diversidad de los participantes.  

Here we leave some highlights: 

Chinchilla Wines (Descalzos Viejos winery in Doña Felisa vineyard), one of the most renowned wineries of Ronda, in the NorthWest of Málaga, a romantic and historical village. All their wines display a high level. The careful making process  provides well-balanced and full wines. We would point out the roble, the less aging red, because of its aroma and versatility. As well as the one-year-old red because, from Maria's point of view, it is the best-structured.

Aquí dejamos lo más destacado:

Chinchilla Wines (la bodega Descalzos Viejos en la finca Doña Felisa), una de las bodegas más prestigiosas de Ronda, en el Noroeste de Málaga, una ciudad romántica e histórica. Todos sus vinos presentan un gran nivel. El cuidadoso proceso de elaboración logra vinos bien equilibrados y redondos. Podríamos destacar el roble, el tinto con menos crianza, a causa de su aroma y versatilidad. Además el tinto crianza que, desde el punto de vista de María, es el mejor estructurado.

Altos del Enebro is a small winery for Ribera area that focuses on terroir wines. Their manager, Rodrigo González, was so kind as to explain us widely the selection of the grapes and plots for their wines. All of them are high level, but I would like to underline Altos del Enebro, from a selected plot, whose features seem to me outstanding. Their brand Tomás González is highly recommendable as well.

Altos del Enebro es una pequeña bodega para la zona de Ribera que se centra en vinos de parcela. Su gerente, Rodrigo González, tuvo la amabilidad de explicarnos en profundidad la selección de uvas y parcelas para sus vinos. Todos son de alto nivel, pero me gustaría subrayar Altos del Enebro, de una parcela escogida, cuyas cualidades me parecieron sobresalientes. Su línea Tomás González es altamente recomendable también.

A blooming DO is Vinos de Madrid (Wines from Madrid), an area that is claiming a pre-eminent role in the current Spanish wine panorama. From this region we could taste La casa de Monroy wines as well as listening to the interesting explanation of the winery owner. The winery is close to our favourite Méntrida DO in Toledo, benefiting from the altitude, the wether, the old vines and the poor soil. We could point out: The recovering of white malvar variety that reminded María of the recently recovered Eva variety from Extremadura. Also the "Petit", a wine plenty of fruit due to its staying in concrete eggs. Their aged red "La casa de Monroy" offers us the same but riper fruits.

Una DO pujante es Vinos de Madrid, una zona que está reclamando un papel preferente en el panorama actual de los vinos españoles. De esta zona pudimos catar los vinos de La Casa de Monroy al igual que escuchar las interesantes explicaciones de su propietario. La bodega está cerca de nuestra favorita DO Méntrida en Toledo, beneficiándose de la altitud, el clima, las viñas viejas y el terreno pobre. Podríamos destacar: la recuperación de la variedad blanca malvar que le recordó a María la reciente uva recuperada Eva en Extremadura. También su "Petit", un vino con abundante fruta debido a su permanencia en huevos de hormigón. Su tinto crianza nos ofrece las mismas frutas, pero más maduras.

From Rueda and Ribera DO's Valdrinal winery showed a verdejo white and several reds from Ribera from less aging (roble) to moderate aging (crianza). All of them are true reflection of a terroir.

De las DO Ribera del Duero y Rueda, la bodega Valdrinal presentaba un blanco verdejo y varios tintos de Ribera desde los de menor crianza (roble) hasta los crianza. Todos ellos son fiel reflejo de una tierra.

This time we could not say hello to our friends from Torello, very busy at their booth. For sure their cavas were as great as ever.

Esta vez no pudimos saludar a nuestros amigos de Torelló, muy ocupados en su stand. Seguro que sus cavas eran tan buenos como siempre.
